I imagine that would have been scary--if you're in a confusing situation like that it's not fun not to have all your faculties. Maybe he had contacts, then? I can't imagine him wanting him to wear contacts on a regular basis, but maybe occasionally.
Yeah, he's not that way at all in canon, but it was what seemed plausible in the situation. I mean, he's usually able to justify the sometimes shitty things he does because it's necessary for his job, but in this case he has no way to justify it, even to himself. And it doesn't even work out. Plus at this point he hardly has a stable identity anymore, so yeah, I think some self-loathing makes sense.
