It can really be a challenge to imagine L in that way! But everyone is a baby once, no matter who they become in their adult life. One of the things that initially drew me to Death Note was that Light, who seems to villainous and arrogant at times, has a family and a home. His mother probably reminds him that she used to change his diapers. Even the orphan characters have some sort of origin, even if maybe they can't remember it. Everyone in the world comes from somewhere, but that's so hard to believe no matter how obvious it can be, and people don't always want to have their illusions shattered.
