I second what [livejournal.com profile] kaostic & [livejournal.com profile] templar1138 have said--you could look for a sharpening tool in whichever software you're using to create icons with! I know for a fact that Photoshop has one; I'm using a program called Gimp and it has a sharpening tool as well. Or you could just type in the text individually--most image-editing programs have those; they show in the toolbox as a 'T' button, as far as I'm aware. (I think even Paint has one!)
